CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK, UTAH

CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK, UTAH

The Grand (Great) Panel is located in Horseshoe Canyon, a remote section of Canyonlands Nat'l Park. This example of Native American rock art is the largest in North America, if not the world, measuring nearly 200 feet wide. Some of the humanoid figures are 7-8 feet tall. The missing section on the far left is the result of a misguided attempt by a petroleum company engineer to blast off a section to take as a souvenir, using dynamite! This unfortunate event took place in the early 1900s before the area was a national park and serves as an example of why protection of natural and cultural sites remains of ongoing importance.
