Chapada Diamantina region in Bahias State, was the heart of early diamond mining in Brazil. Chapada Diamantina National Park occupies a portion of the region and could be described as similar to areas of the American Southwest in appearance...if they were covered with greenery and forests, and many waterfalls. Some of the interesting features of the region are outside of the park boundary. Lencois, a small town of 4,000,is considered the gateway to Chapada Diamantina. Surprisingly, excellent lodging along with restaurants providing gourmet meals can be found in Lencois (not to be confused with Lencois Marahanses National Park).
