DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER

While photographing high surf on the Puna Coast of the Big Island, I noticed a visitor who strayed too near the edge of the lava shoreline. She did not pay attention to the fact other observers were staying away from the edge of the lava cliffs. I saw a huge swell rolling in and started snapping continuous frames believing the visitor might get a bit wet. The results were far more dramatic than any of us watching could have imagined and could have been deadly. The last frame of the sequence is of the onslaught of water rushing towards my camera. I stopped shooting at that point to assist the lady struck by the wave. Fortunately, she survived a potentially fatal encounter and I'm sure has new found respect for the power of the ocean.
